End of a Big Year

Another year has come and gone, and all that other mushy stuff you say around this time. So once again, here's a small recap of my year!

2014 IS ALMOST OVER, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
Stayed single almost the whole year? Big news! I can actually say no to this! It was only half a year, kind of...
Were involved in something you'll never forget? Just being involved in a relationship is unforgettable.
Tripped over a coffee table? I'm sure I did
Came close to losing your life? Nope, not yet!
Saw one of your favorite bands/artists live? Nope
Did something you regret? Nothing I can remember
2014: Friends and Enemies
Did you meet any new friends this year? I like to think so
Did you hate anyone? Nah, everyone is pretty cool with me
Did you lose any friends? I've started drifting away from some people, unfortunately.
2014: Your BIRTHDAY!
Did you have a cake? I can't actually remember...
Did you get any presents? Some very nice ones
Did you get what you wished for last year? I never really asked for much. But what I did, I got.
2014: All about YOU
Did you change at all this year? I've definitely come out of my shell and became more affectionate
Did you change your style? Not that I can tell. Though I don't wear makeup or jewelry very often anymore.
Were you in school? Yup, and still going to school.
Did you get good grades? Decent grades.
Did you drive? Yup, and I still have my L. I don't like driving...
Did you own a car? Nope. I think I need my N for that...
Did anyone close to you give birth? My cousin's wife gave birth fairly recently.
Did you go on any vacations? Nope, work got in the way.
Would you change anything about yourself now? I really need to learn to stand up to people... Especially at work.
Did you dye your hair? I dyed it once very early this year, then cut nearly all of it off.
2014: Wrap UP:
Was 2013 a good year? Probably one of the best years to date.
Do you think 2014 will top 2013? Perhaps
Best thing that happened in 2013? Well, I got a boyfriend
IN THE YEAR 2014 I CONFESS THAT I…
Kissed in the snow? There hasn't been any snow to kiss in
in the parking lot? at the beach ? in secret ? Probably not, never went to the beach, and not really in secret...
Had your heart broken? Nope, and it better stay that way
Painted a picture? I painted using a stencil...
Wrote a poem? Several for class
Ran a mile? Hell no.
Visited a foreign country? Never even left Canada this year
Cut in a line of waiting people? Not that I can remember
Told someone you were busy when you weren't? I think I was pretty good about not doing that
Cooked a disastrous meal? I set the fire alarm off while making soup...
Lied about how old you were? Nope, never needed to.
Cried yourself to sleep? Nope
IN 2013 I….
Broke a promise? Not that I can think of
Lied? Maybe a few white lies...
Disappointed someone close? I would hope not
Hid a secret? A couple...
Pretended to be happy? All those days at work when it's super busy and there's no one to help me...
Slept under the stars? Like... camping? Nope
Met someone who changed your life? Most definitely
Changed your outlook on life? Maybe a bit. I've always been positive, and that hasn't changed
Sat home all day doing nothing? Yup...
Lost something expensive? I've been fairly good about not losing stuff this year
Learned something new about yourself? I might have actually been good at the manager position that was offered to me...
Tried something you normally wouldn't try and liked it? I experimented with a few new foods... Nothing too radical though. Still staying away from seafood.
Made a change in your life? I finally accepted that I am capable of affection
Found out who your true friends were? I've always known.
Met great people? Of course! I like to think my group of friends has grown. I can count them on two hands now!
Stayed up til sunrise? I might be a little too old for that now...
Cried over the silliest thing? I've cried from laughter over a silly thing.
Had friends who were drifting away from you? It's sad to say, but yes.
Spent most of your money on food? That pretty much sums up my whole year...
Gotten sick? Ugh, yes. January 1st, I got the flu. First week of February, I got the flu again
Liked more than 5 people at the same time? Like as a crush or like as a friend? Nay to the former and Yay to the latter.
Became closer with a lot of people? I like to think so.

Happy List 3

Okay, it's getting late and I have nothing to really post about. So time for another quick Happy List! Here and here are the first two Happy Lists I have done.

-Looking at old blog posts and realizing I've matured in the two years that I've been writing them
-Finally getting that package in the mail that I've been waiting for
-The smell of brand new, never been worn clothing
-Finally knowing what it's like to have someone cuddle me
-Making plans with people that don't fall apart
-Not being the one in my group of friends that has to always wake up early for school or work
-Getting back into shape (a bit)
-Walking to the beat of my music
-Being able to wear my winter jacket again
-Having a jacket that actually fits me perfectly
-Reading a book that is too large to stuff into my bag, so I have to carry it around and look like an even bigger nerd
-Finding out that I'm not even as big of a nerd as I thought
-Learning new things (mostly video games) to make myself even nerdier
-When my parents no longer bug me about getting a boyfriend (though they still bring up the whole wanting grandkids thing)

Nice and short tonight, since my bedtime was nearly an hour ago. Time for sleep now!

The Glory of Short Hair

For most, if not all, of history, women are expected to have long hair, or at least longer than the average male. In today's society, this is less important, but still there. It's rare to find a guy that would actually prefer to date a girl with short hair, and just as rare to find a girl who would rather have short hair than long hair.
As most people probably know, I have short hair. I've had short hair for several years now, and in that period, the longest I've had it has been just above the shoulders. People say I look great with short hair, but I don't keep it like this just for the appearance. So here is a list of all the great resons for a girl to have short hair.

1) It's easy to take care of. There is no blow drying, straightening, curling, pulling back or whatever girls do these days. All I have to do is wash it, then towel dry, and it comes out looking great almost every time.

2) I use a lot of shampoo and conditioner. As opposed to the mound of shampoo and conditioner that long hair needs, I use about the size of a dime for shampoo, and about the size of a quarter for conditioner. It lasts for a long time.

3) It doesn't get messed up in the wind. Well, not too messed up, and whatever happens, I can fix it basically just by shaking my head.

4) I don't have to pull it back for work. As long as it's not really in my face or hanging down, I don't have to do anything for it for work.

5) People notice it more than long hair, especially right after a hair cut. I suppose this is going back to the appearance part. People will notice and compliment me more often with my short hair than when I had it longer. I swear, in one week I will probably get about three compliments. Most often it's people who seem to think I've changed it, and will say 'I love what you've done with your hair'. I get a little confused, because it's the same every day. But I accept the compliment anyway.

6) It makes me feel brave. Amazingly enough, yes it does. Most girls would feel self conscious, and just because I don't feel that way, I feel better about myself. I know I can be different and have a hair style that is not always considered beautiful, and I can pull it off. I honestly believe that most girls would look great with short hair too, but they're too scared to try.

7) It's fun to run my hand through it. I really have no explanation for this. It just is...

8) If you want to dye it, just grab one of those root touch ups. Unfortunately for me, they never have the auburn colour that I love, so if I want to dye my hair, I have to use a whole package, which is normally about four times more than I need.

9) If any hair falls out (and you know it will), you'll just be stuck with little strands, rather than those massive monstrosities that you could use as thread to stitch up a hole in your shirt.

10) This might just be me, but if you ever cosplay or dress up for Halloween, it's easy to be a male character. Considering most of the best characters are male, this comes in handy from time to time.

11) It's great to stay cool in the summer.

But of course, there are a few cons.

1) If you want to do anything fancy, you're pretty much limited to using gel. And gel never seems to work in my hair.

2) If you want to dress up as a girl character from a movie, book, show or video game, you're very limited unless you have a wig.

3) If you want a boyfriend, it'll be hard to find one that is happy with dating a short haired girl.

4) It can be very cold on your neck in the winter.

5) If you want it to stay at a certain length or style, you have to get it cut every month.

Not So Common Courtesy

After being kept awake for over an hour last night because of them very rude neighbours, I decided that it's my duty to remind everyone about come common courtesy rules.

1) If it's after eight o'clock at night, you should refrain from playing any sort of musical instrument. You may think you're playing quietly, but I can guarantee that your neighbours will hear. And you may be surprised to know, but some people go to bed early because they have something called work in the morning. This rule should also apply to parties on weekdays and any other activities that produce loud and/or annoying sounds, and should be applied for a full twelve hours, until 8 o'clock the next morning.

2) Current company will always come before company on the phone. This includes friends, family, or the poor person behind the counter trying to take your order while you hold up one finger to indicate that you need a minute. If you must finish your conversation, please get out of line and allow everyone else to get on with their lives.

3) Rules are made for a reason, especially the rules of the road. If you cannot follow them, then get off the road. This includes drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. No cutting people off, no illegal U-turns, no driving down the right turn lane and budging in at the front of a very long line, no J-walking, no thinking that you're above the law.

4) Say please and thank you. I'm not sure what other parents taught their kids, but when I was growing up my parents would always remind me to say please and thank you. (The whole always saying sorry thing is just from being Canadian. Nothing to do with my parents) If you're still learning English, I have to say that you really don't have any excuse. Some of the only French words I know are please and thank you. If nothing else, I can be polite. In addition, if you don't know how to order in English, it's 'Can I please have..." not "Give me..."

You Know You May Be a Bookworm When...

I know I've done something like this before (I think...) But I'm reading a really good book right now and I just couldn't help myself.

1) You have to be awake by six o'clock the next morning for work, but you stay up until midnight because the last three chapters have just been so good.

2) When you finally put your book down, your heart is actually racing, as if you were the one that just fought the battle, or ran the race, or escaped death.

3) You consider your two hundred books to be a pathetic collection.

4) You're sizing up some space in your room for a third book shelf.

5) You know that a perfect looking book is not a loved book. It's the ones with the cracked spine, the worn away corners and maybe the odd crease, that have been carried around in bags and purses because the owner cannot bear to be away from it. It looks like it's been to Hell and back, because, if you're taking a trip to help, you might as well have a book, right?

6) You savor your book like an expensive piece of Swiss chocolate. Nibble at it here, bite it there, then finish it all in one go once it's half way done. And always regret that it's now over.

7) You always feel like you don't read fast enough, because your collection is always growing twice as fast as you're reading it.

8) You would rather read your book during breaks at work/school than socialize with the people around you.

9) While on a large shopping trip, you made the mistake of buying two massive hard cover books as the first things of your trip.

10) Sometimes you forget that the people in the books don't actually exists, and you start to wonder if they'll ever do a tour or something, when you could meet them and get their autograph.

Customer Rules

As someone who works in customer service, I am just so sick of people. Honestly, I wasn't much of a people person before. Now I hate most people. It makes it worse if someone doesn't follow the simple rules of common sense:

1) Get off your damn phone! Don't you dare stand there chatting on your phone after telling me to 'hold on'. Even worse is putting in a massive order, having it ready on the till then, telling us that you can't pay because your card is on your phone. If that's the case, then get off your damned phone an pay.

2) Have your cash/card ready when you get to the till. This happens mostly with women, who have a purse twice as large as they need it to be, then don't bother with a wallet so that all their money falls to the bottom of their purse and is forever lost. Please, just pay with a card. We don't want to stand around as you count out all your dimes and nickles, then realize you don't have enough and in the end have to pay with a card anyway.

3) Give us the size of the drink you want before you ramble off your list of demands. My memory might be getting better because of work, but I can't remember a dozen different customizations.

4) If you want no foam, tell us before we add the foam. No, we don't just have extra steamed milk. We measured perfectly for the perfect milk to foam ratio.

5) If you ordered a no foam drink, don't leave it on the counter for five minutes. Foam will build! There's this magical thing called science. It tells us that air is lighter than milk. Therefore, the air in the drink will go up, creating foam. You don't want foam? Don't blame us if you leave your drink and let foam build up.

6) No, we made the drink right. You're just a whiny bitch.

7) If we did make the drink wrong, don't ask if you can keep the wrong drink. You have to pay for extra drinks.

8) When I ask 'is that all for you?', that if your chance to take a second to think if you want something else. Not right after the transaction has gone through.

9) Yes, I know we're understaffed. Please don't hold up the line by telling me that.

10) The sugar bin is not a garbage can. The two black things that look like garbage cans on either side of the counter are, in fact, garbage can. Throw your extra coffee into those. Not into the bin that's quite obviously full of sugar.

This Is Why I'm Single

I meant to hold off on yesterday's post so that I could post this today. But I kind of forgot... So hey, special bonus Valentines Day post!

Like many people on the interest, I have spent another Valentines Day alone. Kind of. I was at work, and the atmosphere was actually pretty good. I'm not one of those bitter people that complain about how the day is all about making money. Because sometimes society needs a day to just show their appreciation for other human beings.

Moving on, I think it would be interesting to examine why I have been single my whole life. *Warning* Bragging may ensue

Pros
1) I'm not ugly! I hope. I'm average. I'm not going to tear myself down and state everything that I think is ugly about myself. Because honestly, I think I'm pretty average. I'm not severely overweight, but then I'm skinnier than what I would consider beautiful. My hair never really looks good and my skin is never perfectly clear.

2) I'm not one of those girls that spends an hour in the morning doing my hair and putting make up on. I wash my hair in the morning and get dressed, that's pretty much it for five out of seven days of the week. In fact, there's only really one day I ever really wear make up.

3) I play video games. And not even to the point where it's disturbing or off putting. I love Nintendo games, but I'm willing to try more hard core games... as long as someone teaches me. I can be competitive, but I'm actually pretty laid back when it comes to gaming.

4) I love nerdy thing! Depending on the guy, I think that's a turn on... right? I would be more than happy to have a Lord of the Rings marathon. And I hate chick flicks. I would never force a guy to sit through a movie like that.

5) I'm not very romantic, and wouldn't require any guy to be either. I think humour and friendship would have to be the base of any relationship.

6) I like to think I have a good sense of fashion, without resorting to being slutty. I would call my clothing elegant, and sometimes nerdy and lazy.

7) I like rock music. I hate the modern pop that's always on the radio these days, with a few exceptions. But my ipad is full of rock (and a bit of Disney). Seriously, I didn't even know hot to pronounce Adele's name until last year (and I still pronounce it wrong...). That's how little I care about that music.

8) My parents are awesome. I'm pretty sure my dad is more eager for me to get a boyfriend than I am. There would be no worries about me introducing anyone to them. Ask anyone. My parents are just the best.

9) I'm not clingy... I don't think. In fact, I like space. Not to mention I don't really have time for a social life of any sort... I think that's a con actually...

10) I'm entertaining... maybe? I really do hope this is a true fact...

Cons
1) I have pretty much no boobs. Yup. Apparently that's important?

2) I'm not a tall blonde, blue eyed wonder. I don't even have long hair. I have greenish eyes, if that helps...

3) I might love my book collection more than anything else in the world...

4) I don't know how to relationship. Which is why I would need something based on friendship rather than romance. I just don't know how.

5) You pretty much need to have a good grasp of the English language, including punctuation and capitalization. Text talk won't fly with me.

So I've come to the conclusion that I'm still single because I'm just too amazing. People are nervous of me or something.
.
.
.
6) I might also have a bit of an ego...

Fancy Words for Idiots

Hey guys! My mind was doing some wandering a few days ago, and a few fancy words popped into my head. Now I've been told that when I write, my 'voice' because rather formal, or fancy. For example, I used the word 'rather' instead of 'kinda.' I don't fall into text talk or anything of the sort, not even while texting. However, my generation and newer generations have unfortunately limited their vocabulary to the very basics. So let's start up 'Fancy words for Idiots'!

Adroit- You're like the Flash... for the mind!
Allure- Daaaamn, you're hot!
Amber- The colour of the traffic light you just went through
Buttocks- Dat ass
Celerity- to be fast, not the green vegetable
Dalliance- That hoe
Diaphanous- The type of clothing many girls wear to be 'sexy'
Elixer- That magical substance that makes you think you're immortal
Eloquent- Fancy shmancy talk
Epistle- A letter that uses your full name
Indolence- Living with your parents until you're thirty because it's easy
Memento- That guy's sweater you still wear even though he broke up with you five years ago
Memorabilia- That box of junk you forgot about but refuse to throw away
Mere- being in the Friendzone rather than a relationship
Nymphet- What most girls seem to see them selves as nowadays
Soufflé- Air cake
Talisman- That magical object that Indiana Jones taught you about
Voluminous- Yo mama

University 101

I just finished my first day of university. I've been at college for the last few years, but it's not as impressive. So here, are a few tips on how to survive your first day.

1) Always arrive early. Like, over an hour. It'll give you time to explore, get lost, get unlost and find all the vending machines, bathrooms, water fountains, benches, staircases and other important things.

2) Start looking for class ten minutes before it starts. It'll give you just enough time to get there when they take attendance, so you can walk in just as your name is being called. Wait outside for a few seconds for the perfect effect.

3) If you ignored the previous tip and arrive to class twenty minutes early, stand outside awkwardly as you try to decide if the people currently in the room or from your class or the class before. It's okay, other people will assume that you're waiting and will wait with you, therefore making it even more awkward when you all realize you could have been in the class ten minutes ago.

4) Make sure you get a snack during your break. Of course, the best place to go is that super popular coffee place all across campus that has a permanent line. It must be good if the wait is fifteen minutes.

5) If the only two vending machines either don't accept bills or are full of diet pop, find a different vending machine. Coke Zero is nasty.

6) Don't say anything on your first day in class. Get a feel for how the professor is first, then decide what type of participation mark they give. No participation needed? Perfect, you can act like you don't care.

7) If you're in an English or Creative Writing class, bring a smart looking book to 'read'. Don't worry, you can actually play on your phone. Just having the book on your desk will impress people and make them think that you actually read things like that.

8) Make sure all your electronics are charged. And on silent, of course. But most importantly charged.

9) Feel confident in your bussing skills. Nothing says loser like someone asking for directions. Get on the first bus that arrives and see where it takes you. It'll be like an adventure.

10) When someone asks you how your first day when, smile, nod and say you can't wait for more. Don't worry, they don't actually care.

((Note: Please know this is a joke and not to be taken seriously.))

Happy New Year!

It's the last day of 2013! And I'm already in my pyjamas... But hey, let's still celebrate by summing some things up. I did this last year too, but things change.

2013 IS ALMOST OVER, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
Stayed single almost the whole year? The whole year, in fact.
Were involved in something you'll never forget? I went to Disneyland, it was pretty unforgettable.
Tripped over a coffee table? Oh probably
Came close to losing your life? Not that I can remember. I'm sure that would have been the unforgettable part...
Saw one of your favorite bands/artists live? I saw my favourite author...
Did something you regret? Nothing big, maybe a few tiny things that I've already forgotten.
2013: Friends and Enemies
Did you meet any new friends this year? I met a few new people at college and work.
Did you hate anyone? I would rather keep them nameless...
Did you lose any friends? I think I've drifted away from some friends...
2013: Your BIRTHDAY!
Did you have a cake? Of course. And it was ice cream.
Did you get any presents? Quite a few, which I posted in my last post.
Did you get what you wished for last year? A few things, yes, and a few surprises.
2013: All about YOU
Did you change at all this year? I'm sure I did. I feel like I've become more responsible.
Did you change your style? Not really. Other than wearing my work uniform for the majority of the week...
Were you in school? Not as much as I had expected. I wasn't too organized in that way...
Did you get good grades? I got a B+ in my last class, and some pretty decent grades in my spring classes from earlier this year.
Did you drive? Yes, and I'm getting better. I started on a hill yesterday... After having my L for nearly two years...
Did you own a car? I don't think I'll own a car for a long time.
Did anyone close to you give birth? My co-worker did, and her baby is adorable!
Did you go on any vacations? Disneyland!
Would you change anything about yourself now? I would like myself to be a little more organized...
Did you dye your hair? Surprisingly, no. I normally dye it at least once a year.
2013: Wrap UP:
Was 2013 a good year? I think it was actually better than average
Do you think 2014 will top 2013? It's possible.
Best thing that happened in 2013? I got a job at Starbucks, and before I've been there for even a year, I'm being offered the assistant manager spot.
IN THE YEAR 2013 I CONFESS THAT I…
Kissed in the snow? Nope
in the parking lot? at the beach ? in secret ? Nope nope nope.
Had your heart broken? Nope
Painted a picture? Nope
Wrote a poem? Quite a few, actually, and not all for class. I'm rather proud of myself.
Ran a mile? Hell no.
Visited a foreign country? Does America count?
Cut in a line of waiting people? I really hope not...
Told someone you were busy when you weren't? Possibly...
Cooked a disastrous meal? I wouldn't be surprised.
Lied about how old you were? The closest would be people assuming I'm older than I am.
Cried yourself to sleep? Hmm, I don't think so.
IN 2013 I….
Broke a promise? I certainly hope not
Lied? Maybe a few white lies...
Disappointed someone close? Again, I hope not.
Hid a secret? My Co-worker's girlfriend bought him concert tickets for Christmas and asked me to give him the day off work, but keep it secret. That's the only one I can think of.
Pretended to be happy? Maybe a few times when I've been very stressed at work.
Slept under the stars? That sounds cold...
Met someone who changed your life? Not that I can think of.
Changed your outlook on life? Hmm, maybe a bit, can't say what it's been changed to.
Sat home all day doing nothing? ...Okay, yeah.
Lost something expensive? One of my rings is on the verge of breaking, but it's not lost...
Learned something new about yourself? I'm capable of taking on challenges and responsibilities
Tried something you normally wouldn't try and liked it? There are a few alcoholic drink that are pretty good.
Made a change in your life? I got a new job that pays well and gives me a lot of hours, and I got accepted into two universities.
Found out who your true friends were? I've always known.
Met great people? At college and work.
Stayed up til sunrise? I've been awake before sunrise...
Cried over the silliest thing? Not really, at least nothing I can think of.
Had friends who were drifting away from you? It's sad to say, but yes.
Spent most of your money on food? That pretty much sums up my whole year...
Gotten sick? Not as much as usual.
Liked more than 5 people at the same time? Like as a crush or like as a friend? Nay to the former and Yay to the latter.
Became closer with a lot of people? I like to think so.

List time! I thought there might be a few book worms out there that might be interesting in see what exactly I've been reading. By this point I think I was just starting grade ten, so it's been about a years worth of books there. Not bad, I think that's nearly a book a week. Then again, most of those books only ranged between 300 and 400 words... Anyway, the next parts of the list will come later.

Happy List Part 2

I did one of these lists a while ago as part of a small writing exercise, and I'm going to make another one. Because if you think about what makes you happy, then you will be happy, right?

-Being told you're doing a good job while by yourself during a busy time at work
-Any sort of cold beverage when you're really thirsty
-That moment when your nose unclogs during a bad cold (especially after a sneeze)
-Getting into a hot shower when you wake up sick
-Walking into an air conditioned building when it's hot outside
-That sudden drop on a roller coaster when you become air born and the only thing keeping you in the seat is a small seat belt
-Playing a new video game for the first time (and not being terrible at it)
-When you walk into a book store and just feel like you belong (or any store that strikes your fancy)
-When that book (or movie/CD) that you've been waiting ages for finally comes out
-Finding something that suits you perfectly and instantly falling in love with it
-Finding out that that thing you fell in love with is reasonably priced.
-Seeing your name published in a book
-That feeling of excitement before a big trip, when you can't sleep despite having to wake up early the next morning
-When you're left home by yourself for more than two days, and realizing you're more responsible than you originally thought.
-When your parents come home after a week of vacation and you don't have to be so responsible any more (and the dog stops howling and whining at two in the morning)
-When you get a day off work, and more than one friend also happens to have that same day off
-Finding someone who shares to same love of an author/book series/movie
-When you favourite author gets and award for a book, and for some reason you feel honoured just because you've read that same book

It has officially been one year since I started this blog! Yay! I'm rather proud of myself for keeping with it for so long. I normally get bored  and lazy after a few months, so the fact that I've only missed a few updates in the whole year is very impressive. So why don't I have you a look at the stats since I started this blog.

A Work Fatigued Mind

About a week ago I posted something about what typically goes on in my mind. Now I thought you would get some entertainment from knowing what goes through my mind at work.

1) I'm hungry. Why am I hungry? I just ate at nine this morning. I wonder what time is is now. Holy shit, it's two.

2) I work in a grocery store and I still can't find some food to eat. Guess it's cheese buns again!

3) Ooh! New person! That means new friend material... Damn, the new person barely talks... Well this is awkward. I'll just go clean this thing...

4) Why do people keep thinking our sugar bin is a garbage can? *sob*

5) I should learn to swear in another language... I wonder if my dad will teach me some in Swedish.

6) Is that a wasp? Shit, that's a wasp. Shit shit shit shit shit... Okay, act calm. Shit, where'd it go? Can I get a manager to get rid of it? AAAH! There it is. Get away get away get away! Help? *sob*

7) It's three minutes to nine, why do you want coffee? *sob*

8) Damn this buggy is hard to control. Whoops, that's a wall...

And please remember this is all in my mind. I wasn't actually swearing out loud when I saw that wasp.

Worst Inventions Ever

Sorry for missing my post yesterday, I've just been tired. And because I have a head ache and just ate my first meal in ten hours, I'm a little cranky, so let's rant!

1) Decaf coffee. What's the point? The only useful thing about coffee is that it gives you an energy boost, but decaf coffee has had the caffeine roasted out of it, so it has absolutely no use.

2) Ipads/tablets/smart phones. I'll be honest, I have an ipad, and I love it. However, I really do hate it, and how it has affected me. I am so unproductive when I have it. I will even get up half an hour earlier than I need to just so that I will have time to play on my ipad n the morning. The only useful thing I have on it is my school organizer, the weather network (which I have no looked at in weeks), and my e-mail. Everything else is just a waste of time.

3) Tanning bed/spray tans. I have no idea why looking like a Dorito is so popular. It seems like everyone I know makes fun of the people who use tanning salons, but I know pretty much all of them would take the chance if someone offered them free time in one of those salons. Our society loves tanned people, and it's to the point that people need fakes tans. Just disgusting.

4) Guns. If guns had not been invented, who's to say that we still wouldn't be riding around in a horse and carriage and wearing beautiful dresses. Guns were really the first big breakthrough in technology. And of course, all the deaths they cause, but hey, people kill people, not guns, right?

5) E-readers. I have a completely irrational hatred of these things. A book is the physical form of the story, so if you're reading on an e-reader, you're not reading a book, you're reading a novel. It doesn't sound like much, but I will always firmly believe that books are the only way to read novels. (That is, until I have to move out and haul all my books around.) I love looking over and seeing my bookshelf and all the books. You cannot do that with an e-reader. It's just not the same.

A Tour of My Room

As you may have guessed by now, I'm a huge fantasy fiction nerd. I'm the girl that has to correct people when they call me a 'sir' or a 'he' in RPG games, because let's face it, how many girls actually play RPG games? And my room reflects this nerdiness, so I'm going to give you a few glimpses of it.

Also, I apologize in advanced, because the only camera I have is my phone, and it sucks.

I made these family crests in grade eleven for an English project. Each one is supposed to represent a major character from Macbeth (The one in the top right is Macbeth's) It took me about an hour or two each day to make them, so probably somewhere between seven and ten hours in total. I got perfect on the project, by the way.

This is one of my most prized possessions. And yes, it is a light. Isn't it beautiful? My parents finally agreed that I needed a new light after they took my old one down to replace the bulb and found a ton of dead bugs in it. They said they would spend $50, so I looked around for a while. I fell in love with this one, but it was eighty, so I paid for the last $30 of it. Since it doesn't exactly match the rest of the house, my parents are going to let me take it when I move.
(Also notice the Mad Hatter poster in the background. Everyone thinks it's creepy to have hanging over my bed...)

Now this is something to brag about. My dad made this shield when he was in high school, and had given it to his mom. When she moved into a care home, I claimed it as my own. It now hangs above my TV, and I'm still searching for a pair of swords to hang below it.

This is a bad quality picture, but here is a real beaver pelt top hat, with a scarf and a peacock feather. I wore it to school in grade twelve for Halloween, and I've kind of claimed it as my own now... I believe it used to belong to my great grandfather... Or maybe my great great grandfather. Either way, it's old.

A your of my room wouldn't be complete without a picture of my bookshelf. Please note that there is another shelf at the bottom of this picture that I wasn't able to get into the frame, and another shelf on a separate bookshelf. I also trim my collection down by a few books every once in a while, so there are about thirty or so book that I've donated.

So there you are, a few of the best aspects of my room. There's more, so maybe I'll do this again later... Maybe when I have a better camera.

I Was a Gullible Child

A Youtuber I've been watching recently did a show based on what they used to believe. I thought it was an interesting idea, so I'm going to some the same thing.

1) When I went to the dentist, I thought that cavities were little bugs or germs that ate your teeth. I had no idea that cavity meant a hole.

2) Now I must have known this before, but yesterday I just realized that there are 31 days in July. I thought the months went 30-31-30, and because August has 31 days, I automatically thought July had 30. Since then I've been taught the knuckle trick, where the knuckle is a month with 31 days, and the groove between the knuckles is a month with 30 or less days. However, I've managed to convince half the people at work that there are 30 days in July...

3) When I was younger, my aunt gave my sister and I some of her old toys. One of them was a barbie that had hair that grew. All you had to do was turn a little dial on her back. There wasn't much left when my sister and I got it, but we thought it was endless. So we cut all the hair off. Later, I tried to do the same with all my other barbies, thinking that their hair would grow back. It didn't.

4) Because my dad used to play Hockey, for some reason I got it into my mind that he played professionally. I asked him once if I would see him on TV, and the said that he would be on very late at night. So that night, when I was at a sleepover at my friends' house, I told them that we had to stay up late to watch my dad play hockey. Of course, we had no idea what channel or what time, and we probably fell asleep early.

5) I also believed my dad was part of the Beatles. He was a huge Beatles fan, and when I was really young he would sing 'Close Your Eyes' (might not be the title of the song, I can't quite remember it). It was also around this time I would go around the house singing the chorus for 'Yellow Submarine'. All day. Every day. I'm now realizing that I was not only gullible, but very annoying...

The ironic thing is, I can remember the point when I realized Santa wasn't real. I was probably around seven or so, and I was playing with the doll house I got for Christmas. I think it was in the summer, so probably about six months after I got the doll house. Then it suddenly dawned on me I had actually watched my dad make part of this doll house. Now I didn't think that my dad was Santa, or worked for Santa. As far as I can remember, I just kind of thought 'hey... Santa didn't give me this.' Then again, I could have been traumatized and just repressed the memory...

But for the record, I never believed in the Easter Bunny. My dad had tried to claim he saw it once, but I just laughed at him... I did believe in the Tooth Fairy though, and I still find it amazing, and kind of disturbing, that my parents could reach under my pillow to take the tooth and place a coin without me waking up. Imagine if it was a murderer?

Happy List

I did it again, I'm sorry. I have a terrible memory. Today I'm going to a co-worker's baby sower though, so I don't have time now to write anything new. Not too long ago though I answered a few writing prompts, so I'll just post those for today.

Make a list of everything that makes you happy now
-A pleasantly warm day followed by a cool night
-Getting off work when the sun is still shining
-Being in enough shape to walk up a hill without wheezing for breath by the top
-When the radio at work plays good music for once
-Getting all my plans for school in order
-Having those plans disrupted upon finding out I’ve been accepted into UBC
-Organizing my book shelf to accommodate new books
-Finally getting better at driving standard (soon I’ll be able to drive on hills!)
-Wasting a whole day playing video or computer games
-New movies showing up on Netflix that I would actually watch
-Knowing that The Hobbit: Part 2 is coming out this year
-Re-watching Lord of the Rings for the hundredth time
-The sound of rain (even if it is just the sprinkler)
-Finding out I’ve earn 86 cents of interest after six months of having a tax free savings account
-The anticipation of reading a good book
-Fantasizing about the creation of a Wheel of Time movie
-The thought of having one class when school starts (and being able to meet new people)
-Earning more money than I spend
-Being able to sleep under a duvet rather than a sheet
-Remembering that I’m having my second piece published in the Douglas Anthology
-Imagining that my dreams of becoming a writer will come true (even better if I become famous)
-Waking up to find that my dreams of being late for work are only dreams

I feel uneasy about…
My future. I think it’s a fairly common thing to feel uneasy about. It’s one of the few things we cannot predict accurately. No matter how much we plan and work to make everything perfect, all it takes is one small change and everything will crumble. I’ve taken a dangerous path for my future, a path that requires me to overcome obstacles that I’ve put there myself. I might have help starting this climb, but near the end it’s all on me. I cannot rely on anyone to push me forward or pull me up, though on occasion someone might extent a helping hand when I fall to the ground. I could have taken an easier path, but where’s the fun in that? Why should I take the gentle slope when I can climb a cliff? Sure, I might fall and break some bones, but when I get to the top, the achievement is that much more important. I could never bring myself to work a job I hate, sitting at a desk all day answering phones and typing e-mails. Even if it means sitting at a desk all day typing words that I may not even use. It’s the end that matters, that little light at the end of the tunnel that I will reach for when in the middle of the gloom. No matter if that light is a sputtering candle or the brilliance of the sun, at least it’s something.

What is your favourite taste and why? What memories does it evoke?
As a very picky eater, this isn’t very hard, though it is rather ironic. I favourite taste would have to be chocolate mousse, despite the fact that I’m not a big fan of chocolate. I don’t eat it in chunks, such as in solid bars of chocolate, or Smarties or M&Ms. I do love it in ice cream form though, but mostly as chocolate mousse. It’s very light and fluffy, and doesn’t feel like I need to be eating it with something to wash it down with. Mostly I love it because my grandma used to make it from scratch. She would buy a massive block of chocolate, and make a whole bowl of it when we had family dinners. Even if I was stuffed from dinner, I would always have at least two platefuls of her chocolate mousse. It’s one of the things I miss about her; her amazing cooking (especially with sweets and desserts). I haven’t had chocolate mousse in ages, as the only way I know how to make it is from a box, and it’s just not the same. Maybe someday I’ll root out a homemade recipe.

I feel helpless when…
There is a spider or bee near me.

Alright, in all seriousness, when someone is sad. I have no idea how to comfort people. My best cure is to make people laugh, and sometimes that’s not appreciated. I understand that sometimes people just have to be sad, such as when they’ve lost a loved one, and cracking jokes to make them smile is just wrong. But I don’t know what else to do. I’m a naturally happy person, and when I am sad, I suck it up and put on a smile. But obviously you cannot tell someone to just ‘suck it up’ after their grandma has died. So what do I do? I guess I could give a hug, but that makes me awkward, and still doesn’t do much. Hugs aren’t as magical as they’re portrayed in movies. I hate talking it out, because often I can’t relate to why someone is being sad, and I just end up nodding and agreeing. Oddly enough, people still come to me to talk about it. I suppose it’s because I like to rant, so they think I’ll be good to chat with? I cannot solve relationship problems; I’ve never even been in a relationship. I cannot do anything when a loved one has died, and I can’t bring back friends who have moved away. So what is there to do?
