The Glory of Short Hair

For most, if not all, of history, women are expected to have long hair, or at least longer than the average male. In today's society, this is less important, but still there. It's rare to find a guy that would actually prefer to date a girl with short hair, and just as rare to find a girl who would rather have short hair than long hair.
As most people probably know, I have short hair. I've had short hair for several years now, and in that period, the longest I've had it has been just above the shoulders. People say I look great with short hair, but I don't keep it like this just for the appearance. So here is a list of all the great resons for a girl to have short hair.

1) It's easy to take care of. There is no blow drying, straightening, curling, pulling back or whatever girls do these days. All I have to do is wash it, then towel dry, and it comes out looking great almost every time.

2) I use a lot of shampoo and conditioner. As opposed to the mound of shampoo and conditioner that long hair needs, I use about the size of a dime for shampoo, and about the size of a quarter for conditioner. It lasts for a long time.

3) It doesn't get messed up in the wind. Well, not too messed up, and whatever happens, I can fix it basically just by shaking my head.

4) I don't have to pull it back for work. As long as it's not really in my face or hanging down, I don't have to do anything for it for work.

5) People notice it more than long hair, especially right after a hair cut. I suppose this is going back to the appearance part. People will notice and compliment me more often with my short hair than when I had it longer. I swear, in one week I will probably get about three compliments. Most often it's people who seem to think I've changed it, and will say 'I love what you've done with your hair'. I get a little confused, because it's the same every day. But I accept the compliment anyway.

6) It makes me feel brave. Amazingly enough, yes it does. Most girls would feel self conscious, and just because I don't feel that way, I feel better about myself. I know I can be different and have a hair style that is not always considered beautiful, and I can pull it off. I honestly believe that most girls would look great with short hair too, but they're too scared to try.

7) It's fun to run my hand through it. I really have no explanation for this. It just is...

8) If you want to dye it, just grab one of those root touch ups. Unfortunately for me, they never have the auburn colour that I love, so if I want to dye my hair, I have to use a whole package, which is normally about four times more than I need.

9) If any hair falls out (and you know it will), you'll just be stuck with little strands, rather than those massive monstrosities that you could use as thread to stitch up a hole in your shirt.

10) This might just be me, but if you ever cosplay or dress up for Halloween, it's easy to be a male character. Considering most of the best characters are male, this comes in handy from time to time.

11) It's great to stay cool in the summer.

But of course, there are a few cons.

1) If you want to do anything fancy, you're pretty much limited to using gel. And gel never seems to work in my hair.

2) If you want to dress up as a girl character from a movie, book, show or video game, you're very limited unless you have a wig.

3) If you want a boyfriend, it'll be hard to find one that is happy with dating a short haired girl.

4) It can be very cold on your neck in the winter.

5) If you want it to stay at a certain length or style, you have to get it cut every month.

Like a Shark in the Air

Oh man, I had a great weekend. The highlight was going up flying in a tiny little plane. My dad's old work friend got his pilot licence, so after many weeks of waiting, we finally got a nice weekend. We were trying in February, but every weekend we planned it for, it started raining... or snowing. I was lucky enough that they had planned it for a Sunday last week, because that's the only weekend day that I wasn't working.

On Saturday though I was working at a Heritage Tea. Despite all the work, and a lot of standing on hard concrete floors, it was a lot of fun. I got to dress up in a beautiful red skirt and a nice lacy blouse. I with I had a wig so that my hair would have matched the outfit too. After that day though, my whole body was sore, even my arms and back. We had to do a lot of lifting to get chairs and tables set up and put away. I might post some pictures later, but I'm lazy and you know me. I probably won't post anything...

But back to flying! The plane was tiny, barely even fit four people. I think it was made in 1982, or something like that, but that's actually fairly modern, compared to some of the plains we say. I'm also very proud to say that I was not scared at all. I think I might be a little reckless when it comes to my life.... But we all survived, and there was never any danger.

The flight was beautiful. The whole time I was trying to find of a poem to write, to capture everything I saw in words. But there was just so much that I gave up. The one thing that stuck with me was one time as we were flying low, and you could clearly see the shadow of the plane. It was like a shark in the water. And it's amazing how many more details of things you see, even things that you think would be better seen from the ground. Just the way the water moves. It doesn't look like it's flowing, but rather shimmering.

It was just so amazing. If anyone ever gets the chance to go flying in a tiny little plane, take it! Being in a massive jet is so much different. You never see the ground and the surroundings as much as you do in a small plane. No matter how terrified you are, it's worth it.

Navi Dress

So I think I should just change my post days to Wednesday and Friday. It seems like the only days that I actually remember...

Anyway, a dress I bought online came in the mail today! Well, it came a few days ago, but no one was home to sign for it, so I just picked it up from the post office today. It's all the way from Latvia! And it actually took less time to get here than the shirt I ordered a few weeks ago. I tried it on as soon as I got home, and it fits perfectly! I still wear a belt around my stomach because it's rather plain, but it also reminds me of a pixie, or Navi. So I figure now I have another Zelda cosplay outfit! I just need to buy some white wings and maybe get some temporary blue hair spray, or a wig. I figure none of this will happen until Halloween, when I can get them all for cheap. But still, it's awesome. And it's still normal enough that I can wear it in public on an average day. However, it is a halter dress and therefore has no sleeves. I'll probably have to wait another month or so until it's warm enough to wear outside. As it is, I'm wearing it inside and I'm barely able to refrain from putting on another layer.

Ah, it's good to have new clothes. I went through a long dry spell when I didn't spend any money on clothes, or at least very few clothes. I did splurge around early winter to buy some work clothes...

This Is Why I'm Single

I meant to hold off on yesterday's post so that I could post this today. But I kind of forgot... So hey, special bonus Valentines Day post!

Like many people on the interest, I have spent another Valentines Day alone. Kind of. I was at work, and the atmosphere was actually pretty good. I'm not one of those bitter people that complain about how the day is all about making money. Because sometimes society needs a day to just show their appreciation for other human beings.

Moving on, I think it would be interesting to examine why I have been single my whole life. *Warning* Bragging may ensue

Pros
1) I'm not ugly! I hope. I'm average. I'm not going to tear myself down and state everything that I think is ugly about myself. Because honestly, I think I'm pretty average. I'm not severely overweight, but then I'm skinnier than what I would consider beautiful. My hair never really looks good and my skin is never perfectly clear.

2) I'm not one of those girls that spends an hour in the morning doing my hair and putting make up on. I wash my hair in the morning and get dressed, that's pretty much it for five out of seven days of the week. In fact, there's only really one day I ever really wear make up.

3) I play video games. And not even to the point where it's disturbing or off putting. I love Nintendo games, but I'm willing to try more hard core games... as long as someone teaches me. I can be competitive, but I'm actually pretty laid back when it comes to gaming.

4) I love nerdy thing! Depending on the guy, I think that's a turn on... right? I would be more than happy to have a Lord of the Rings marathon. And I hate chick flicks. I would never force a guy to sit through a movie like that.

5) I'm not very romantic, and wouldn't require any guy to be either. I think humour and friendship would have to be the base of any relationship.

6) I like to think I have a good sense of fashion, without resorting to being slutty. I would call my clothing elegant, and sometimes nerdy and lazy.

7) I like rock music. I hate the modern pop that's always on the radio these days, with a few exceptions. But my ipad is full of rock (and a bit of Disney). Seriously, I didn't even know hot to pronounce Adele's name until last year (and I still pronounce it wrong...). That's how little I care about that music.

8) My parents are awesome. I'm pretty sure my dad is more eager for me to get a boyfriend than I am. There would be no worries about me introducing anyone to them. Ask anyone. My parents are just the best.

9) I'm not clingy... I don't think. In fact, I like space. Not to mention I don't really have time for a social life of any sort... I think that's a con actually...

10) I'm entertaining... maybe? I really do hope this is a true fact...

Cons
1) I have pretty much no boobs. Yup. Apparently that's important?

2) I'm not a tall blonde, blue eyed wonder. I don't even have long hair. I have greenish eyes, if that helps...

3) I might love my book collection more than anything else in the world...

4) I don't know how to relationship. Which is why I would need something based on friendship rather than romance. I just don't know how.

5) You pretty much need to have a good grasp of the English language, including punctuation and capitalization. Text talk won't fly with me.

So I've come to the conclusion that I'm still single because I'm just too amazing. People are nervous of me or something.

6) I might also have a bit of an ego...

Look at That Sexy Beast in the Mirror

Sorry for the late post today; I normally write this around 12 in the morning, but I forgot before I went to bed last night...

Like I said on Wednesday, I'm actually going to talk about something that I find rather series, although the title may say otherwise.

I'm noticed that a lot of girls have self esteem or image issues, no matter how pretty they are, they cannot see it. I admit, I am one of those, but instead of complaining, I push it to the back of my mind and remind myself that looks is not everything. I honestly wish that everyone else could do this.

Now you're probably thinking, 'But Afy, you're so skinny!' Weight is the foremost complaint from women, I find. Yes, I am skinny. No, I do not feel lucky for it. I wish I could be one of those girls with a curvy body. All I really have are knobby angles... Having a body of skin and bones is not attractive! Seriously, what girls wants to have smaller boobs than a fat man? Please, don't starve yourself for what you think is the ideal body, you'll just end up looking like a skeleton with flesh. Now I'm not saying go out every day for fast food, of course. I respect girls who are comfortable with having meat on their body. I don't respect people who have let their body go so badly that they need one of those electric scooters to get around.

Although body image and weight seem to be the most important to girls, I have also noticed that make up is used far too often and too heavily. I do use make up, so I can't say it's completely bad. However, I only wear it when I'm going out, and even then it's just a little bit of cover up, eye liner and mascara. When you can clearly see the layer of cover up and blush, then perhaps you're using too much. I also never wear eyeshadow, because whenever I put it on, I look like a prostitute. There are a lot of people who can pull it off, but there are also a lot more people who use the wrong colour, or too much, and end up looking like some failed attempted at a Barbie doll. The natural look, however, works on everyone. (Except maybe if you have terrible acne...) Or, in my case, the lazy look, as most days I just don't want to spend the time to put make up on.

However, I know that this rant will never convince most people that they don't need to be skinny or covered in make up to be beautiful. the ideal has been so ingrained in everyone's mind because of those damn drama shows. I was actually kind of hoping that Twilight would start a whole craze to be incredibly pale like a vampire. Apparently the need to look like Snooki won over though... Yeah, I'm not a fan of tans either, but I admit that I'm just being bias there.

Anyway, I'll leave you off with a poem a wrote a while ago:

Look at your hands.
Those hands are perfect for holding.
Look at your arms.
Those arms are perfect for hugging.
Looks are your legs.
Those legs are perfect for showing off.
Look at your stomach.
That stomach is perfect for embracing.
Look at you hair.
That hair is perfect for running fingers through.
Look at your eyes.
Those eyes are perfect for staring at.
Look at your lips.
Those lips are perfect for smiling.

So close your eyes and look.
Look inside of you,
At everything that is perfect.
Look not at looks, but at purpose.
For in the end,
It is the holding
The hugging,
The showing,
The embracing,
The feeling,
The staring,
The smiling,
That matters.
Purpose has no appearance,
But it's what makes you beautiful.

So if you must look,
Look at the outside,
But care for the inside.
